A non-represented classified employee or an exempt employee may request and shall be granted up to 5 days of bereavement leave for each death of an immediate family or household member.
An employee on less than a full-time appointment may be granted bereavement leave on a pro rata basis consistent with the period of his/her appointment occurring within a five day period.
The employee may also be granted, with supervisor approval, additional time away from work for the purpose of bereavement or condolence through the use of other accrued leave or leave without pay.
The College may request an employee verify that the leave taken is for the purpose of bereavement or condolence for an immediate family or household member.
To provide time off for bereavement or condolence due to the death of a family or household member. This policy is intended to provide leave in addition to that provided under the College’s sick leave policy for exempt staff. This policy defines and establishes who is eligible for and the terms and conditions for use of bereavement leave.
To Whom Does This Policy Apply
This policy applies to all non-represented classified employees and exempt employees. This policy does not apply to academic employees, classified employees, part-time temporary employees, or volunteers.
RCW 28B.551 Leave Provisions Generally
Bereavement Leave – leave with pay granted for the purpose of condolence or bereavement.
Day – a day is defined as one business day.
Household Member – a person who resides in the same home as the employee who has reciprocal duties to and provides financial support for one another. This term does not include persons sharing the same general house when the living style is predominantly that of housemates, or a dormitory or commune.
Immediate Family Member – child (including step-child, foster child or legal ward), spouse or domestic partner, mother, father, brother, sister, grandmother, grandfather, mother-in-law, father-in-law. Other persons may be approved by the President of the College.
1. An employee requesting bereavement leave shall complete a leave form in accordance with College procedure and submit such form for approval to his/her supervisor. The leave request must include the name of and the employee’s relationship to the deceased.
2. In the event the employee is requesting leave for a person other than an immediate family member, the leave request must also be submitted for approval to the President of the College.
